Our speaker, Christina Mayr, will discuss:
- A typical career progression for technical writers from entry-level to principal
- Skills needed to move from mid-level to senior-level and how expectations change at this level, especially in hiring
- How managing a team of writers differs from leading technical writing projects
- Non-obvious leadership skills for technical writers
About Our Speaker:
Christina Mayr is a technical writer, information architect, outspoken user advocate, and champion for the technical writing profession. Currently leading a small team of technical writers in an IT organization, Christina prides herself on leading and coaching others to improve their skills in technical communication. Her professional interests include technical content strategy, content operations, and leadership.
After completing her Master of Arts degree in technical and professional communication at East Carolina University, Christina worked as a technical writer on technology-focused teams for various industries, including electronics manufacturing, pharmaceutical research and development, web application development, and networking hardware and software. She has won several awards in Society for Technical Communication competitions, including Distinguished and Best of Show at the regional level and Merit at the international level, and has shared her expertise at various conferences.
In addition to her full-time job, Christina is an instructor with the Duke University Technical Writing certificate program at Duke University and for STC. She has served STC as a volunteer leader, presenter, Intercom article author, and mentor for more than 10 years. While president of her local STC chapter, she led the development of a new website and established or improved popular programs for chapter members that garnered several awards, including Community of the Year.
In her spare time, Christina runs a resume and career coaching consultancy, helping clients from all industries get better jobs and better pay by improving their job search strategies and application materials.
