Volunteer to Judge for the STC Chicago Technical Communication Competition

Each year STC Chicago holds its annual Competition to review and honor the efforts of technical writers, instructional designers, website designers, and others in technical communication roles. For those who
submit entries, this is an opportunity to receive valuable feedback from your peers and to get insight into how others interpret your product. For those that judge, you experience the opportunity to see what
others in communication fields are creating and see how communicators from larger companies to the lone writer at a start-up company are shaping communications.

Additionally, for those in-between jobs and wanting to explore new areas of the technical communication market, this opportunity allows you to see how things are changing as well as adding to your resume.
Show potential employers that you invest in your skills, you stay current with the market, and that you take initiative.

STC Chicago Welcomes You to Judge in this Year’s Competition

As a judge, you are part of a three person team that reviews three to five entries. Using a standardized evaluation form, you review entries for Information Design, Writing and Editing, and Overall delivery.
You review each entry assigned to your team based on your knowledge and experience for quality and industry standards. As a team, you share your evaluations and decide on those entries to acknowledge
with one of three award levels: Merit, Excellence, or Distinguished. Though rare, your team may decide to withhold an award for an entry.

When you volunteer, you attend a brief orientation on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the CARA offices to receive guidelines in the judging process. You will also receive your entries for judging at this meeting.
From this date until Saturday, January 5, 2013 you review and decide as a team on awards for each entry. On Saturday, January 5, 2013 you meet once again at the CARA offices to formalize your award
recommendations and return the entries.

Volunteers consistently report that judging is a positive experience and provides a new way to improve their own knowledge and skills.

You are not required to be a member of STC to be a judge. The only requirement is experience in content development, writing, editing, training, or a similar technical communication field.

If this opportunity interests you, sign up to judge on our Judges pages. The deadline to volunteer as a judge is Friday, October 26, 2012.
